Your feet are beautiful in sandals. (Song of Solomon 7:1)
The soldier’s shoes are not the dancing slippers of this world or the lounging slippers of the slothful, but the shoes of the Christian warrior who knows Christ and makes Him known. (Lehman Strauss, “Galatians and Ephesians,” p. 232f)
Have you been watching the 106th Tour de France this month? Viewing athletes from around the world peddling along the Tour’s Route of 2019 is an armchair vacation–starting in Brussels, Belgium, rolling past verdant French meadows, pretty villages, towering churches and alpine vistas–en route to the bicyclists’ triumphal spin down the Champs-Elysees, Paris, on July 28. Did you know that Tour contestants carry with them an extra pair of shoes to facilitate a quick change in case of shredding or some other footwear mishap? Apparently the cycling shoe is the most important piece among all cycling gear. That’s because, of the three contact points between your body and the bike–palms, pelvic bones, and feet–your feet transfer all the power from your legs to the pedals to move the bike. Hence, choosing the right pair of cycling shoes that suit not only your style of riding but, more importantly, the shape of your feet, is crucial. (thegeekcyclist.com)
“The sandals of the gospel are a sign of readiness–readiness to march and to do battle. The Roman sandals were made with nails that gripped the ground firmly even when it was sloping or slippery. . . . Wherever the Christian soldier’s feet take him, he shares the gospel that can firmly ground a world reeling under the weight of desperate need and conflict.” (Preacher’s Outline and Sermon Bible Commentary–Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians) In Psalm 34 King David, God’s warrior par excellence, recommends these components for your gospel footwear:
I will praise the Lord at all times. I will constantly speak His praises.
I will boast only in the Lord; let all who are helpless take heart.
Come, let us tell of the Lord’s greatness; let us exalt His name together.
I prayed to the Lord, and He answered me. He freed me from all my fears.
Those who look to Him for help will be radiant with joy;
no shadow of shame will darken their faces.
In my desperation I prayed, and the Lord listened;
He saved me from all my troubles.
For the angel of the Lord is a guard; he surrounds and defends all who fear Him.
Taste and see that the Lord is good.
Oh, the joys of those who take refuge in Him!
Fear the Lord, you His godly people,
for those who fear Him will have all they need.
Even strong young lions sometimes go hungry,
but those who trust in the Lord will lack no good thing.
Come, my children, and listen to me, and I will teach you to fear the Lord.
Does anyone want to live a life that is long and prosperous?
Then keep your tongue from speaking evil and your lips from telling lies!
Turn away from evil and do good. Search for peace, and work to maintain it.
The eyes of the Lord watch over those who do right;
His ears are open to their cries for help.
But the Lord turns His face against those who do evil;
He will erase their memory from the earth.
The Lord hears His people when they call to Him for help.
He rescues them from all their troubles.
The Lord is close to the brokenhearted;
He rescues those whose spirits are crushed.
The righteous person faces many troubles,
but the Lord comes to the rescue each time.
For the Lord protects the bones of the righteous; not one of them is broken!
Calamity will surely destroy the wicked,
and those who hate the righteous will be punished.
But the Lord will redeem those who serve Him.
No one who takes refuge in Him will be condemned.

“Effective Christian leaders learn to embrace who God has made them to be. Too often as leaders, we spend our effort trying to fit into someone else’s shoes. But the most effective leaders learn to wear their own shoes. They embrace their own personalities, operate out of their strengths, and learn to grow as leaders. Fully embracing your God-given strengths, you discover the thrill of doing exactly what you’ve been created to do. Admittedly, discovering your unique gifts can be difficult. It takes a bit of self-cognizance and God-awareness to recognize the talent and ability God has given you. But affirming and utilizing your strengths allows you to discover joy! The challenge in growing into our own shoes is resisting the temptation to compare shoes with everyone around us. We’re to grow into our own shoes, not those of another leader. We can take hope from knowing that God is faithfully growing us into just the leaders he wants us to be. We need only to endure the temporary annoyance of slipping around in too-big shoes. God promises that the day will come when we fit perfectly into our own shoes.” (Excerpts from “Shoes that Fit,” Esther Feng, christianitytoday.com)
“You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere . . . to the ends of the earth.” Acts 1:8
Put on God’s power, friend! You’ll love the way His shoes fit you.

Hymn based on Isaiah 52:7-10
How beautiful upon the mountains: are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings.
That publisheth peace, that bringeth good tidings of good: that publisheth salvation,
that saith unto Zion thy God reigneth.
The watchmen shall lift up the voice: with the voice together shall they sing.
For they shall see eye to eye: when the Lord shall bring again Zion.
Break forth into joy: sing together ye waste places of Jerusalem.
For the Lord hath comforted His people: He hath redeemed Jerusalem.
The Lord hath made bare His holy arm: in the eyes of all the nations.
And all the ends of the earth: shall see the salvation of our God.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Ghost;
As it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be: world without end
